Like most, I too am concerned about the environment. I try to remember to always do what I can to reduce, reuse, recycle. I usually use my own coffee mug at work instead of their disposable cups, I use fabric bags when grocery shopping, etc.
But lately, I’ve heard people discussing paper towels. There are many out there that don’t use them. I can see this working except when cleaning up a “cat episode” or blotting wet chicken out of the package before freezing or cooking it.
Otherwise, I would like to try to make a conscious effort to not reach for a paper towel but instead use some dishcloths. I feel a lot of dishcloth knitting in my future!

Hm, I’ve never heard of chicken blotting. But we’re off the papertowels. It wasn’t hard at all! As for the cat incidents–it’s wasteful, but a large clump of TP does the trick just as well as a paper towel.
Comment by bezzie June 17, 2008 @ 10:46 amI love the dish cloth you made for me for Christmas – I use it all the time!

Comment by Melody June 17, 2008 @ 11:40 ami used to go through paper towels like nobodys business — but in the last couple of years – I think a roll can last me a whole month sometimes! sometimes.
Using dishcloths is a great idea. I have a bunch that my mom knit for me. I always have one in the kitchen and try to use paper towels sparingly. The cat dishcloth you made me for Christmas is in my kitchen right now!
Comment by Marianne June 17, 2008 @ 12:27 pmnow *that* is a good idea
Comment by heather June 17, 2008 @ 12:52 pmWhen I was just out of college there was some kind of paper shortage crisis. My first year teaching I worked with a woman who used a paper towel to wipe her hands, and then set it on the counter to dry and would reuse it until it fell apart. (This was in the ’70’s)
Comment by Mom June 17, 2008 @ 1:34 pmLove that idea. I have a ton of cotton use up. I was thinking bags but more disclothes can never hurt.

Comment by Joy June 17, 2008 @ 5:43 pmI have two towels that aren’t knit (they are just kitchen towels) with tops knit on them so they hang on my stove and I LOVE them, I use them non-stop…If you want I will get the sizes if you want to copy them (but all in knit)
We aren’t much for paper towels, even with a 7 year old and 4 year old. If there’s a spill we just grab the closest hand towel, or if your a kid, BATH TOWEL!! haha I have a couple of knit cloths I use.
Comment by Lora June 17, 2008 @ 5:49 pmOne knit cloth I use as a dryer sheet. I just spray my 50% fabric softener/ 50% water on it and throw it in the dryer with the clothes. Saves on those little dryer sheets all over the place.
Yay for dishcloths!!
